 The purpose of this two-day course is to provide the participant with basic knowledge and understanding of hydrogeology and groundwater management in the context of groundwater-based water supply and distribution systems. This course provides an introduction to hydrogeological fundamentals & concepts, and pertinent aspects of groundwater management. The course combines theory with practical information based on the instructor's practical experience. The emphasis of this course is on the "why" rather than the "how" and emphasizes the importance of proactive groundwater management, including wellhead & aquifer protection and well monitoring & preventive maintenance. This course also addresses groundwater regulation.

You should take this course if you:

  • Are a water system manager, operator or otherwise involved with groundwater-based water systems.
  • Are a professional who works with hydrogeologists in a team environment.
  • Are involved in groundwater-based water systems or construction projects above (vulnerable) aquifers.

The course is not intended for hydrogeologists.

Learning Objectives

 Upon completing the Hydrogeology and Groundwater Management course, you will be able to:

  • Become familiar about general groundwater aspects.
  • Become familiar about B.C. aquifers and the classification system.
  • Identify selected groundwater system components.
  • Identify selected groundwater flow concepts.
  • Identify steps and planning requirements for well construction projects.
  • Describe the purpose of various well testing and evaluation requirements.
  • Identify tools for monitoring and evaluating well performance.
  • Describe a well monitoring & maintenance plan.
  • Identify potential water quality risks and hazards.
  • Describe the requirements for wellhead and aquifer protection.
  • Become familiar with provisions of groundwater regulation.

The program comprises of lecture, case studies, activities and a working groundwater model used to demonstrate key concepts. 


This course provides:

  • 1.2 core CEUs for water distribution, water treatment, and small water systems.
