Watermark at Bearspaw Wastewater Treatment Plant: Tertiary Treatment and Nutrient Removal for River Discharge

Description:The Watermark at Bearspaw development is located immediately to the west of the City of Calgary within Rocky View County. An on-site Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is currently being built to service the development and additional land is set aside for future WWTP expansions to meet future County servicing needs The WWTP is located in the heart of the Watermark at Bearspaw development. Because of its proximity to homes in the development, advanced odour treatment technologies were included in the design and the WWTP itself is being constructed to appear like one of the homes.Effluent from the WWTP will be discharged through an outfall on the Bow River; an environment that currently sees occasional exceedences of total phosphorous guidelines. The WWTP design includes tertiary treatment with both chemical and biological phosphorous removal as well as nitrogen removal. To support the regulatory application, the treatment process was modelled using GPS-x software and the effluent plume from the outfall was modelled using CORMIX software. These models predicted that the additional nutrient loading from the WWTP into the Bow River would not increase the number of seasonal exceedences currently observed in the river.
