$61,805.03 - $80,590.63 annually, plus a 5.5% Recruitment & Retention Adjustment

The Environmental Standards Branch (ESB) in the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is responsible for the design, development, implementation and evaluation of a wide array of regulatory and non-regulatory approaches to waste management and environmental protection throughout British Columbia.

As the Environmental Management Officer, your role is to lead and guide the development of ministry and/or provincial legislation, policy, and technical standards in industrial waste management, with a preference for agricultural and organic waste management, including waste to resource alternatives, towards the achievement of Environmental Protection Division priority goals and objectives. This work requires involvement and interaction with a wide variety of stakeholders (including: local government, private waste sector, environmental stakeholders, planners and developers) and First Nations to develop and enhance environmental stewardship in waste management in BC.

As the ideal candidate, you are a designated professional engineer with experience developing policy for industrial waste management, with a preference for agricultural and organic waste management. Highly skilled at balancing competing interests in decision making, you exhibit exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills when providing professional engineering and policy advice to the ministry. You are a results-oriented team player who uses a collaborative approach, is flexible and adapts well to shifting priorities. You thrive on your excellent problem solving expertise and persuasion skills when promoting solutions and motivating stakeholders.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Applied Science, Science, Resource Management or a related professional field or equivalent as recognized by the Association of Professionals Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC) and five years’ related experience; OR,
  • Graduate degree in Engineering, Applied Science, Science, Resource Management or a related professional field or equivalent, as recognized by APEGBC and 2 years’ related experience.
  • Registered with the APEGBC as a Professional Engineer, or immediately eligible for registration.
