Attend to hear presentations from provincial and local government as well as from consulting firms — Register Now

The management of municipal wastewater and biosolids generates greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. While various stages of the management process have the potential to generate greenhouse gases there is also enormous potential for generators to reduce their carbon footprints through measurement, management and mitigation strategies.

Who should attend?

  • Local government
  • Municipal engineers, planners, wastewater treatment managers, system operators, and wastewater product / service providers
  • Sustainability, environmental and integrated resource managers
  • Consultants
  • Anyone involved in wastewater treatment and biosolids management decision making and anyone interested in learning more about greenhouse gas measurement, management and mitigation.

Why should you attend?

This seminar will introduce attendees to:

  • The basics of greenhouse gas accounting for municipal wastewater treatment and biosolids management.
  • The type and a quantity of greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment and biosolids management.
  • The Biosolids Emissions Assessment Model (BEAM) developed for the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) to assess greenhouse gases from Canadian biosolids management practices, including practical application of the BEAM.
  • Quantification and selling of carbon credits.
  • The Climate Action Charter and potential changes in your existing wastewater treatment and biosolids management programs that can help fulfill your commitments.

Goals and Learning Objectives

  • Understand carbon accounting and how to make “cents” of carbon debits and credits in wastewater treatment and biosolids management.
  • Identify the key wastewater treatment processes and biosolids management options that contribute to carbon emissions and sequestration.
  • Become aware of the tools available to evaluate wastewater treatment processes and biosolids management options from a carbon budget perspective.
  • Understand the mechanisms and opportunities for financial returns from wastewater treatment and biosolids management.
