Date of Event: October 28, 2009

Location: Delta Burnaby Hotel & Conference Centre, Burnaby, BC

Goals and Learning Objectives

  • Learn about methods for inspecting sewer and water mains for the purpose of condition assessments that are suitable in BC
  • Learn how condition assessment data can be used to develop economically efficient infrastructure renewal plans
  • Understands how statistical methods can improve the quality of asset management planning
  • Understand where technology has the potential to improve existing condition assessment methods
  • Understand how main inspection, condition assessment, and deterioration analysis form an essential pillar of true asset management planning

This seminar is designed to introduce the process of asset deterioration analysis as a technique to support more advanced renewal planning and asset management for underground water and wastewater networks.

PSAB and basic asset management practices tend to use age as a proxy for condition. As pipes approach their expected end of life based on age, we tend to think of them as fully deteriorated and
therefore ready for replacement. In fact, age is only one aspect in the physical deterioration process of underground water and sewer pipes. Condition and criticality may have little to do with age, but are far more relevant in best practice based asset management and renewal planning.

This seminar will:

  • Introduce attendees to current methods of conducting condition assessments in underground sewer and water pipes
  • Explain how this information can be used to help make underground infrastructure renewal plans that are based on facts, desired levels of service and economics
  • Feature examples of condition assessment and deterioration analysis methods that are currently available for use in British Columbia

The audience will be invited to take part in a round table discussion to understand where technology and engineering methods can assist local municipalities to design infrastructure renewal programs that are affordable and sustainable.

This one day seminar is designed to introduce the process of asset deterioration analysis as a technique to support more advanced renewal planning and Asset Management for underground water and wastewater networks.

Who should attend?

  • Engineers, technologists, and utility managers that are involved in designing and conducting renewal planning for water and wastewater networks
