Message from the President
By Rick Corbett
Penticton marked our 29th Annual Conference - the largest ever! The final count of delegates was over 650. The credit for pulling this off goes to Bill Muir, the Conference Chair. Many thanks also to Mike Nolan for the great Technical Program and to Barry Biddle for his long hours in putting the trade show together. Of course, many of the accolades go to my predecessor, El Presidente Ramsay - who was suitably anointed in the cold waters of Okanagan Lake shortly after mid-night on the last day of his term!
Dr. George Tchobanoglous (Dr. T to his friends) announced during his keynote address that we need to "think out of box and not be afraid to embrace new ideas". If there was ever a time to do this in our industry - this is the year. The tragedy at Walkerton, Ontario is still fresh in everyone's mind. In January, British Columbia received a "D" rating from the Sierra Legal Defense Fund in a report entitled Waterproofing Canada: Canada's Drinking Water Report Card. A few weeks ago, a cryptosporidiosis outbreak hit North Battleford, Saskatchewan. The water industry is under a state of siege. In British Columbia, innovative approaches to both the technological and financial challenges are required.
Is BCWWA up to the challenge? I think we are. We are going into the new year with even more energy and new resources. We now have a complement of four full time staff. Xue Wang joined is in February to take on the accounting challenges of the organization. Vilma Rosa came on-board in March to assist Del and Diana in our programs. Operator certification will undoubtedly be a reality in the province in the future. Our Operator Education Committee is gearing up with new courses and improved course materials. Similarly, our Cross Connection Control Committee is busy developing standards that we hope will become the basis for improved legislation in this critical area of water quality protection.
We are refocusing some of our committees to provide increased opportunities for you - our members. The old Residuals Management Committee has become the new Wastewater Committee. This group will now cover all aspects of wastewater treatment at the medium and larger plants. The Receiving Water Quality Committee will take on an expanded role as the new Watershed Management Committee. This committee will work closely with the Drinking Water Committee in addressing the area of drinking water source protection. Watch our web site (www.bcwwa.org) for more information on committees and events.
We are more active than ever - but there is room for you. Pick a committee, come to a meeting, or get involved in putting the conference together. BCWWA is a vibrant organization through the efforts of volunteers. Join in and let's have another great year.
