Dear Colleagues,

Whistler in 2002I am pleased to announce that Whistler, BC is proud to host this year’s BCWWA Annual Conference, which will be held from April 20 - 24, 2002. The conference will be held at the Whistler Conference Center, located in the heart of the Whistler Village.

As you may know, Whistler offers a scenic backdrop and a wide assortment of recreation opportunities for conference delegates and partners. Spring skiing is at it’s best in late April, or if you are interested in less active recreation, you can enjoy scenic walks along valley trails with stunning mountain views followed by exceptional dining experiences at some of the best restaurants in North America. In addition, we have prepared an impressive partner’s program that will serve up an eclectic mix of cosmopolitan amenities and pristine beauty.

As usual, the conference starts with a golf tournament at the Squamish Golf and Country Club (Saturday, April 20). This golf course is surrounded by massive mountains and is an easy walk. There will be a shotgun start to the tournament with great prizes and social events in Whistler.

We have organized two tours on Sunday, April 21st - one for wastewater treatment plant (WTP) enthusiasts and one for the rest of us. The first tour is of the Whistler WTP, which is one of the most advanced in North America and includes a state-of-the-art SCADA system. A second tour will explore the Whistler/Blackcomb snowmaking facilities. This will be an exciting tour that offers scenic views of the Whistler valley and Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.

Following the tours, a “meet and greet” will be held at the MSC Exhibits in the Conference Centre on Sunday evening. The exhibit area is another conference highlight with over 100 suppliers and manufacturers in attendance. The exhibit area will open on Sunday evening and most of Monday.

Several impressive speakers are scheduled to attend the conference. The Honourable Joyce Murray, Minister of Water, Land and Air Protection will provide opening comments on Monday morning. Also, AWWA Vice President, Mr. Dennis Leslie, will address major water initiatives throughout North America and particularly water security.

We have also prepared a comprehensive technical program for Monday and Tuesday. Sixty-five papers on timely subjects will be presented during four concurrent technical sessions. This will offer to delegates a selection of subjects and speakers over two days.

A semi-formal banquet has been scheduled for Tuesday evening, complete with music provided by a first rate orchestra. In addition, a casino with blackjack tables, roulette wheel and craps table will tempt gamblers with donated merchandise and a draw for a resort destination vacation. All proceeds from the casino will be donated to Water for People program.

An action packed Wednesday will feature four concurrent sessions: on hands operator programs in the water and sewer areas as well as a CWRA hosted session on G.I.S applications and a separate session focusing on changes in Drinking Water Regulations.

I am sure that this year’s BCWWA Annual Conference will be another great success. It offers professional development, operator training sessions, a venue to meet suppliers and manufacturers and, of course, ample opportunity to meet your peers. Please join us in Whistler, BC and pursue your professional development in a pristine mountain environment setting.

Yours sincerely,
Brian G. Barnett, P. Eng.
