BCWWA Awards
The BC Water & Waste Association (BCWWA) presents awards to recognize individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements in the water and wastewater industry and for the commitment and support they provide to the BCWWA.
Industry Excellence
These awards recognize leaders and innovators in the water and wastewater sector in British Columbia or the Yukon.
Awards are presented at the BCWWA Annual Conference & Trade Show on May 1 - 3, 2016 in Whistler, BC or at the recipients’ place of work if they are unable to attend the conference. Recipients are also featured in the 2016 summer edition of Watermark magazine and on the BCWWA website.

2016 BCWWA Industry Excellence Awards Judging Panel
- Steve Conrad, Associate Director
Steve is a research fellow and associate Director of the Pacific Water Research Centre at Simon Fraser University. Steve has a 20 year history working with the water and wastewater community on water-energy management, climate change adaptation, water system modelling, water governance, and identifying the human dimensions of water management. Steve works closely with industry associations, sitting on the climate change committees of the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA) and American Water Works Association (AWWA), chairing the BCWWA climate change committee, and co-leading the International Water Association (IWA) working group on water and energy. Steve currently sits on the BCWWA board as AWWA Director. -
Senja Kylmala, Water Treatment Operations Technical Coordinator
Senja is a graduate of Okanagan College’s Water Quality Technology program and has been working for Metro Vancouver since 1999. Senja worked at the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant and has been at the Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant since 2005. She holds Level IV EOCP certification in both wastewater treatment and water treatment and was the 2012 recipient of the Victor M. Terry Award: Excellence in the Water & Waste Community – Operator. - Murray McLeod, General Manager
Murray has been active in the water and wastewater industry since the early 1970’s. He is the general manager and a principal with PSI Pipeline Supply International Inc. His involvements in our industry and the BCWWA have caused him and his company to be honoured and recognized with Corporate Recognition and personal Recognition Awards. Murray has personally received the Stanley S. Copp Award, The George Warren Fuller Award, and the 5S Award. He is a Life Member of AWWA, and most recently Western Canada Water Association’s John McClure Award recipient for excellence and dedication to the association and the industry. - Ted Molyneux, Senior Engineer
Ted has volunteered with the BCWWA for over twenty years, working with the Small Water Systems and Drinking Water Committees, and on the board as President in 2010-11 and American Water Works Association (AWWA) Director from 2012 to 2015. Prior to becoming a senior water engineer with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada in 2003, Ted worked for twenty years with a Langley-based sales, service and contracting firm specializing in groundwater resource development, including water treatment and distribution. - Colwyn Sunderland, Asset and Demand Management Specialist
Colwyn is a senior project manager with Kerr Wood Leidal specializing in asset management, infrastructure planning and financing, and water planning. Colwyn has 19 years’ experience in consulting, local government, and technology development in the water sector. He is a Past-President of the BC Water and Water Association (BCWWA) and is currently First Vice-President of the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA). - Carlie Thauvette, Senior Manager of Member Services
Carlie is the senior manager of member services with the BCWWA, responsible for ensuring the delivery of valuable programs and services to BCWWA members and to the broader water community across BC and the Yukon. Carlie has nine years of experience working in the areas of communications and program management with provincial government and not-for-profit organizations. - Brian Thorburn, Senior Operator
Brian is a senior operator and manages the Operational Excellence Program in BC for EPCOR Water. Brian has over 20 years’ experience operating water and wastewater systems in BC and also teaches water and wastewater treatment courses online and face-to-face. He is Past-President of Association of Boards of Certification (ABC), Director for Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP), member of AWWA WTOP committee, and past judge for the AWWA ACE Top Ops competition.
BCWWA Champions
These awards recognize individuals and organizations that have consistently and meaningfully contributed to and supported the work of the BCWWA over many years. They have enabled the Association to make positive change in the water industry, and helped create and deliver valuable programs and services to their fellow members. The BCWWA values their contributions, and through these awards celebrates and recognizes them!
