February 2007

February 28th, 2007

On the last day of our shortest month, when the weather is cool and wet in most places in BC, it is easy to forget the challenges that we are likely to face with regard to water shortages later in the year. When our systems are not overly challenged by wind and weather, it is easy to forget that sometimes those same systems are overtaxed. When legislators choose to leave well enough alone it is easy to forget that the wells, large and small, need attention. In many ways BCWWA serves as a reminder of the many issues that can affect our water and our wastewater systems. Our myriad committees work to stay current on specific issues like SCADA, Cross Connection Control, Water Sustainability and Small Water Systems. Our education programming helps to train operators and professionals all around BC, the Yukon and beyond so that they can deliver the most knowledgeable service and meet the requirements that their industry requires. By facilitating the networking and knowledge sharing that takes place at BCWWA events we help keep these important issues front and centre. To our members I say congratulations – the work you are doing makes sure that these matters are not forgotten.

The   annual   BCWWA    conference  is  one  of the    times  that members come together to share expertise, experience and fun. Being a professional and doing important work does not mean that fun goes out the window (or in our case down the stream). From April 21st to 25th BCWWA will almost take over Penticton. In that time there will be speakers and technical sessions that will help us all learn even more about the work we are doing, there will be meetings and award presentations that let us know about the important work that is being done and who is doing it, there will be a substantial trade show that showcases the newest and best of the manufacturers, suppliers and consultants who support our industry, there will be networking events like dinners and receptions where people will have an opportunity to connect with old friends and new acquaintances. And of course there will be fun. If you like to golf, you can do that at the golf tournament on Saturday the 21st.  If you like to gamble, you can participate in a fun casino after the gala banquet on the 24th. And if you just want to enjoy the beauty of the location, you can do that the whole time you are there. If you haven’t already made plans to be part of this important event – do it now. I hope to see you there.

What are the benefits of being a member of BCWWA? What does a member gain that a non-member misses? Why should I join? These are questions that frequently arise in discussions with potential members. You can review the benefits listed on our website here, but the best way to learn about the benefits is to speak with a member. A current member can tell you about the things that they have gained through their membership including access to current information and networking with others who are part of the water and wastewater industries. Members are able to participate in the decision-making of an organization of nearly 4000 caring and committed water and wastewater professionals. Members help to choose the leadership and set the priorities. While a non-member is an observer, members are part of the team. When you join you demonstrate a commitment to the industry, you show your interest in the sustainability of our water systems and you become more knowledgeable about the various issues that are affecting us all. Is it hard to join? No and we are pleased to welcome all who are interested in the work that we do. If I don’t join can I still benefit from the expertise of BCWWA? Yes, but to participate in any of our events you pay a non-member rate instead of the reduced rate given to members. Can I be a carrying professional if I am not a member? Of course you can, but caring, committed, knowledgeable members know that being a member helps them do a better job in a very important industry. A question for you - What are you waiting for?

BCWWA is its members. The  members  come  from  manyparts of the water and wastewater industry – the people who design our systems, the people who build them, the manufacturers and suppliers who provide the equipment we need, those who regulate the systems and those who operate them. Because we have such a varied membership we can present a comprehensive view of how water and wastewater issues are progressing, and the impacts they are likely to have on us all. As a result, we are the best resource for training and education in the water and wastewater industry in BC and the Yukon. BCWWA relies on its members to ensure that the work the organization is doing is the work that is needed. Because of this, members have several responsibilities. The members elect the Board of Directors who make policy decisions for the association. The members participate on committees that support various initiatives that BCWWA undertakes and in many cases these committees determine what these initiatives should be. Members provide volunteer support to help put forward the myriad seminars, workshops and conferences that BCWWA presents. Although we have a competent and hard working staff, without the volunteer members we could not do many of the things that we do each year. As a result, the members of BCWWA are the association’s greatest asset. As President, I am pleased to be part of such a hardworking team.
